Presentation 1: Background and Strategic Objectives of Mauritius Freeport

GUEST SPEAKER: Mrs Nirmala Jeetah

Nirmala Jeetah is the Director of the Manufacturing Cluster of the Board of Investment of Mauritius and is responsible for the Freeport Unit. She holds a Master’s Degree in Investment Promotion and Economic Development from Edinburgh Napier University and a Master in Quality Management from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Nirmala has extensive experience in the implementation of Business Excellence Model. She has been an Assessor of the South African Business Excellence Model and has been involved in the negotiations of bilateral investment treaties.

She has been very much involved in leading the investment climate initiative in Mauritius, working closely with the World Bank Team and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in formulating the economic reform policies for Mauritius. She currently represents Mauritius at the level of SADC and COMESA for projects in relation to improving the investment climate, investment policies and further promoting regional integration and is the current Chairperson of the SADC Investment Sub-committee.

Luc qualified as CA(SA) in South Africa and has been based in Mauritius since 2002. During his more than 13 years with Shoprite, he has served as Director of various Shoprite entities and has been responsible for the Group’s Mauritius Freeport activities since 2005. Shoprite is the largest retailer in Africa with a presence in 15 countries covering over 120,000 employees and over 1,500 corporate retail stores.
