Investec’s Chief Information Security Officer Herman Young Explores the Future of Disruptive Technologies
On March 7th, 2025, Herman Young, Chief Information Security Officer at Investec Mauritius, delivered an insightful presentation at the Precinct, Grand Bay, on Disruptive Technologies. Jointly organized by Investec and the South African Chamber of Commerce in Mauritius, the event attracted business leaders, technology professionals, and members of the Chamber to discuss the strategic implications of emerging technological advancements.
With more than 30 years of experience in cybersecurity, strategic technology, and innovation, Young provided a thorough exploration of how disruptive technologies—particularly artificial intelligence (AI)—are reshaping contemporary business operations, improving efficiency, and altering competitive dynamics across various sectors.
Young initiated his talk with a historical perspective, introducing Alan Turing, the eminent British mathematician and pioneer in computer science. Turing formulated the Turing Test in 1951, a foundational concept in AI research designed to evaluate a machine’s ability to emulate human-like intelligence convincingly. Young highlighted how, despite recent advancements such as the public launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, current AI technologies still primarily reside within the scope of “Artificial Narrow Intelligence” (ANI)—systems highly proficient at specific tasks but limited in their broader cognitive abilities.
Advancing the discussion, Young introduced the concept of “Reasoning Models,” sophisticated AI frameworks powered by Large Language Models (LLMs). These Reasoning Models utilize LLMs to enhance AI functionality by embedding advanced logical decision-making processes. Young explained that these models empower AI systems to interpret complex scenarios, evaluate multiple outcomes, make logical inferences, and effectively solve intricate problems, greatly expanding AI’s practical applications and operational benefits across various industries.
Looking to future horizons, Young detailed the progression toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—where AI would match human cognitive functions—and Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), envisioned as an era when AI could autonomously enhance its own intelligence through continuous self-improvement. Notably, industry leaders like Elon Musk forecast AGI to potentially emerge as early as 2026, while ASI could materialize around 2045. Young characterized the advent of ASI as potentially “humanity’s last invention,” significantly reshaping societal structures and economic models.
A highlight of Young’s presentation was the exploration of practical AI solutions available today, notably “Agentic AI” platforms such as Infinite AI. These platforms autonomously handle critical business tasks, including automated lead generation, client interactions, sales optimization, and appointment management. Young stressed their cost-effectiveness and scalability, particularly benefiting smaller enterprises by enabling significant operational growth without the substantial traditional risks and expenses associated with scaling.
Young also demonstrated advanced AI-driven coding platforms, highlighting their capacity to dramatically accelerate software development timelines—from traditional cycles measured in months or even years, down to days or hours. However, he cautioned against over-reliance on these tools, emphasizing the importance of robust human oversight to preserve data security, ensure accuracy in business logic, and protect intellectual property.
Concluding his session, Herman Young conveyed an optimistic vision of AI’s role in business transformation. He advocated for strategic adoption, emphasizing that organizations that skillfully leverage AI will not only manage disruption effectively but also secure a distinct competitive advantage, positioning themselves as leaders in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.
